Album: Surfing with the Alien
From the 20th Anniversary CD:
A love song, a song of remembrance, and a song that gains meaning for me each time I perform it. It took forever to record this piece because I knew it was the best melody I’d written for the album, and I wanted to get it right. By the time I had finished, I felt I’d just taught myself a new, more expressive way of playing a melody. Ballads are the toughest to perform, and if the song holds special meaning to you, as this one did to me, it makes it that much more difficult and cathartic. I think we came up with a very unique mix for this song, a mix that gave it a timeless quality. John, Jeff, and I struggled with it a bit until we got the idea that saving the kick drum for the “solo” section was the key. It suddenly turned into a unique and beautiful master mix.
From the Anthology:
ALWAYS WITH ME, ALWAYS WITH YOU: This is a love song, one of many dedicated to my wife Rubina. It's a simple bass line with some unexpected harmony on top that gives it a special quality to play over. With the arpeggiated chords and the syncopated melody, a kind of modern counterpoint arises. When we perform this one I am completely immersed in the feeling of every note and every phrase. It's both cathartic and reaffirming, as it was when we recorded it so many years ago.
